Is DSA Dangerous? Not if you’re MAGA. DSA will not turn the country socialist — that’s a fantasy. They will (1) strengthen the Republicans, and (2) weaken the Democrats. They have already given Reps the best anti-Dem propaganda they’ve ever had — the DSA poison:
“The Dems are electing socialists and Marxists, whose real party, DSA, says they are fighting to: end capitalism, open the borders, abolish the military, and rewrite our constitution. Democrats are the communists that we always said they were.”
The Dems’ only protection is to disown all the socialists. There’s a simple way to do that, but it takes thinking and courage. When the DNC wakes up to the DSA poison, they will gain some courage. Understanding the solution — the Transparency Promise — will take some thinking on our part.
The basic trick of it was used by Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) in the late 1940s to expose and remove Communists (CP-USA) from unions and other civic organizations. It was highly successful. Forcing public votes on anti-Stalinist resolutions caused the concealed CPers to vote “No” to keep their CPUSA membership. This exposed them and they were removed.
The DNC’s job will be far simpler, as they are in control of the infiltrated group.
The Democratic Transparency Promise to Voters:
I fight for fair capitalism. I am not a socialist.
To gain any support from the Democratic Party, candidates must sign the promise, almost the same trick the ADA used. The enforcement comes purely from their own DSA party, not from the Dems. Thinking through this is tricky.
A Deeper Understanding
Candidates can lie and the Promise still works! It won’t work perfectly, but close enough. This is the key to the whole design. The enormous benefits of letting them lie are:
The Party avoids all fights over enforcement. If it called for the enforcement of purity tests, it would never be adopted.
Because it allows would-be candidates to take any position — Medicare for all, free college, all the Scandinavian policies — no one can claim the Dems are excluding their policies from the Big Tent.
But how can it work if everyone can lie? It works exactly like in the 1940s when the CPUSA enforced their party line, so the ADA did not have to prove the concealed Communists were CPers — the CPUSA forced them to prove it themselves.
Think about Sanders. He always says “labels don’t matter, it’s all about policies.” That should be true, but he’s been lying about that all along. Ask him to say “I’m no longer a socialist,” and he would rather die. That’s his life-long identity. That label matters to him more than anything. That’s who he is and how he recruits thousands to DSA.
Sanders would never sign a Transparency Promise. But not signing reveals who he really is. It gives his game away.
But what if he lies and signs it?! That varies by voter type.
Informed voters: Know Bernie has always been a socialist, that DSA is emphatically socialist, and that socialists are working to end capitalism. If these are Bernie supporters, this is a complete deal-breaker. They turn on him for pandering to Democrats or becoming a traitor to the socialist cause.
Deceived voters: Believe Bernie is a “democratic socialist,” not a socialist, and he just wants to fight the unfair parts of capitalism. Lying works on these voters until they learn that DSA, their favorite group, is disowning Sanders, and they start hearing that “democratic socialists” — all of DSA — say that socialism means ending capitalism. This is just the wake-up call Dems have been unable to get through to these voters. Some may stick with Sanders, but this will cut their support for DSA dramatically.
Lying is a disaster for Sanders with either type of voters. So let’s make an honest man of him and ask him to sign the Promise.
Think about other DSA Candidates: If they lie and sign the promise, DSA will kick them out. If they don’t sign, the Democrats will boycott them, and announce that they are socialists who want to overthrow capitalism, and not just do all the things Sanders talks about. And if they ever got elected, they would never get a committee assignment and would have a very hard time getting earmarks for their district. They would not be able to count on votes from all the deceived voters, who would now be alerted.
