This is a history that needs to be told today. There are still many who deny that Hiss was a spy and a traitor. Unfortunately, there are even more who don’t know who Hiss was.

I like the term performative radicals. The worst of them actually dress up like children playing superhero at protests.

There is also a considerable amount of narcissism involved, which as Freud taught us, provides group cohesion.

Radicalism in itself is not bad. The Founders were radicals. They didn’t dress up like Captain America though, with a Star painted on a trash can lid.

I think that you are on point here. The depth of your research is excellent. Look forward to more.

Thanks much. Your narcissism point is very perceptive. I only understood that after learning about "collective narcissism," a very recent finding in psychology. Narcissistic people gain the ego gratification they need by making the group part of their identity. This explains why some people lash out in such extreme ways when they think someone has disrespected their group. They feel it as a personal wound to their ego, and what we are seeing is just classic narcissist rage, which is notorious for its intensity and a lack of control.

In Civilization and its Discontents, Freud claimed that the narcissism of small differences created group self love by directing aggression outward. I believe that he was right about this and have integrated the view into my personal philosophy, which is at its core a blending of Havel and Solzhenitsyn with the narcissism observation.

My tribe in this is a group of one, but it is meaningful to me.

I love the history here, which is well done.
